What Is Investing?

Investing is putting money to work: shifting from consuming capital to owning assets that generate more.

About this lesson

Spending buys the apple. Investing buys the tree. Kids grow up fluent in one relationship with business: money out, stuff in. This week they meet the other one. A share is a real slice of a real company. Real investing is boring on purpose.

What you’ll learn

  • You can own a slice of companies you already love.
  • An asset can pay you while you do something else.
  • Split incoming money: some to spend, some to own.
  • A broad fund owns hundreds of helpers so you do not have to pick the winner.
